Apple's mega-burn
I got burned... real bad... by Apple nonetheless. To all new iTunes users, protect your [music] hierarchy before Apple spanks your file tree structures and ruins all that time you spent organizing that very impressive, extensive music collection. It happened to me, but I still have to admit that my loss is almost worth my introduction to the iPod Nano. I never had (and, in fact, loathed) an iPod, so I feel like I just made a new friend... A friend that borrowed some music and returned the album scratched to hell... except the album is my scrambled collection of music.

Prior to my journey into iTunes, I was an avid Winamp user. I've never quite utilized the Library functions of the player, primarily because I prefer my own folder/file hierarchy over a (application) managed library of my files. There's also the problem of cross compatible library displays between my Linux (MythTV) & Windows box(es)... Regardless, I'm now required to re-organize my collection based on ID3 tag information. This was bound to happen, and if it didn't, I'd hinder my own searching & browsing capabilities after the size of the music collection grew too big to personally manage. My old system involved a folder structure of:

YEAR >

GENRE >

ARTIST >

TRACKS & COVERS

This worked well for the time being, but I'll admit there was noticeable difficulty remembering when and where albums were placed... I'm not counting my mishap as a blessing, but I will claim it as a necessary loss. My new plan involves tag editing, every morning from 6:30AM to 7:45AM, until I've re-organized and re-structured the scrambled collection of music.
